What Are Pros and Cons of Search PPC Advertising?

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

It is better to know beforehand advantages and disadvantages of any system you use. It is foolhardy to try a thing without knowing both sides of it.

Like anything else, pay per click advertising has advantages and disadvantages.

Traffic: PPC provides you with instant visitors.Your ad is immediately visible and clickable. That means visitors within minutes. PPC is matchless in this aspect.

You Control Advertisement: It is entirely up to you when you want your ad to be shown, where you want your ad to be shown. You choose the price and you choose the content. It is entirely your game. you are master of your campaign. You can track and monitor your ad results and modify accordingly. You can also choose the geographical area or type of websites you intend to target.

Targeted Visitors: Because the searchers are already looking for something related to your product or site and your advertisement would be shown for relevant keywords only, you get a set of highly charged and targeted visitors who are more likely to convert into customers.

Pay Only For Click: There are no charges for ad impressions or ad view. You would pay only when somebody clicks your ad. That means you pay for visitors to your website and not for ad display.

Easy To Use: Even a newbie can set up PPC campaigns within minutes. You only need to write an advertisement and choose the relevant keywords. The process itself is self guiding.

Minimum Website Inputs Required: Conventional search marketing method emphasized on developing content and adding pages so that your site stands out from your competitors. But with PPC, you need to compete with your fellow bidders only and you can get a good placement for your choice of keywords. That is a great advantage.

Disadvantages

Its Not Free: You need to have a separate budget for your PPC campaign. This could be a huge disadvantage for small business owners and starters when compared with free methods of traffic generation.

Visitors would come through click and you pay for each click. While few of them may like tocome back but in case of PPC, generally the traffic stops the moment campaign stops.

Learning Curve: While setting up an ad is effortless for the new person also but it takes time and experience to know what works. There is a danger of great losses initially.

Competition: As PPC grows in popularity, more and more advertisers and big houses are coming with big budgets. Incresing competition means bid price war which will push prices high enough and beyond the reach of small business owners.

Good Conversion Mechanism: Most of the searchers are looking for information and may not be interested in what you are selling. It would be a wasted money if visitors goes without any action on your website. Therefore, you need to place a good mechanism to convert your visitors into leads or customers. You need to optimize your site for that maximum effect.

Pay Per Click advertising is useful for getting quick traffic. However, it is important to see what you can spend and how you would work to gain maximum from your campaign. It is important that you make more money from the PPC traffic than you spend on it. That would turn your PPC campaign into powerful and profitable advertising method.

Search Engine Optimisation: Why Not a Flash Website?

Friday, April 18th, 2008

Yeah why not! They look good and can be very creative with a lot of visual effects. But the truth is they are not very search engine friendly. For those who have just spent a lot of bucks on creating a flash masterpiece, no need to panic, there are a few ways to help improve your website??s search engine visibility.

To give you a quick rundown as to why flash websites are not favoured by search engines, they are seen as a one page image file with no text based content. You will notice that when you navigate through a flash website, the URL address will always remain the same. So here you have a website with no text based content, is a one page image file and has no internal link structure, translating into a search engine??s enemy.

Unless you have an extremely popular name within your industry or have an enormous amount of relevant incoming links, then you will get away with having a flash website for the obvious keyword phrases i.e. company name. Who would fall into this category? An example would be Coca Cola, ever heard of them? So for those who fall into the other category, and that would be about 90% of us, fortunately there are alternatives to help boost your rankings.

There are three suitable methods that I would recommend. The first method is by far the easiest and cost efficient. It involves optimising your Title and Meta tags for the single page to the best of your ability and then including optimised text information beneath the flash image. Some may see this as a form of spam, but given the scenario, I would recommend this method provided that the text is written accordingly and avoids keyword stuffing.

The second method can be quite costly and might not be favoured given the fact that you have spent a lot of cash on your flash website. It involves developing a second site designed in HTML. When a visitor visits your site, they would be presented with two links, one to your flash site and one to your HTML site. That way search engine crawlers will access all the content and pages via the HTML website.

The third method is by far the most preferred. It works by developing an HTML website with your flash images embedded on the page, and all content is written in text based form. This allows you to have multiple HTML pages which will give you more Title and Meta tags to work with, as well as keyword rich content to write for each page.

To sum up, depending on your time and budget constraints, there are ways to help you avoid the search engine pitfalls of having a flash website. Any of the methods I have discussed, along with a strong incoming link structure, will help you get that extra exposure in the search engines. If are thinking of designing a flash website, make sure you look at implementing a search engine friendly strategy to avoid complications in the future.

Wordpress Blog Optimization - 5 Wordpress Blog Design Optimization Tips

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

First impression is very important, especially for a blog. Fortunately wordpress blogs are very easy to configure to be made pleasing to the human eye. This will improve the overall reading experience of your reader.

Believe if or not, people will pre-judge your blog by how it looks even before reading a single word.

Wordpress Blog Design Optimization Tip 1: Light Background With Dark Text

This is almost common sense. The contrast will allow the readers to read easily.

Wordpress Blog Design Optimization Tip 2: Fonts Must NOT Be Too Small

I hate those blogs with tiny fonts! Most people will not be able to read font 8! Make it at least font 10, personally I recommend font 12, which is very comfortable to most human eyes.

Wordpress Blog Design Optimization Tip 3: Links Of Titles Must Be H1 Tags

This is more for SEO reasons, rather than just for the human eyes. H1 tags are very important for search engines to identify what the site or blog is about. H1 tags give more weight than “non-H1″ tags.

Wordpress Blog Design Optimization Tip 4: Keyword Rich Categories Name

The name of the categories should modified into keyword rich text. Rather than naming your categories as “categories”, you can be more specific & name them accordingly.

Wordpress Blog Design Optimization Tip 5: External Links Must Open In New Browser

This is rarely talked about but it is my number rule of affiliate marketing! When your reader clicks on a link & leaves your blog, he may never be back again.

If he clicks on a link which opens in a new browser, your blog will still be on his browser so that he can continue reading more of your blog.

SEO Primer Part 1 - Seven Tips To Live By

Friday, April 11th, 2008

I’m going to blow the lid off of SEO< - well how many times have you read that same line. Many times, as I have, I'm sure. That's where we are with SEO at this point in time. There has been so many people who claim to have "figured it all out" or "broken Googles' code" then they want beau coup bucks to share the wealth. Well I'll give you 7 tips and it won't cost you a dime.

First what is SEO? It’s search engine optimization all that means is your web page is ready and willing for search engines to come through and “crawl” (read) it.

Your aim is to rank as high as possible for your particular key phrase / keywords. The below tips will help you achieve real sustainable results. Many of the ebooks and programs you see all over the internet really do or did work but they exploit a certain weakness in a search engines program. The problem with following this type of program is that you don’t have long term results. You may climb fast but when the search engine figures out their weakness and shuts the door - you are gone from the search rankings. The tips I’ll show you aren’t new and you may only get modest results but they will be sustainable.

Tip 1 - A Search Engines main goal is to bring back users time and time again. The way they achieve this is to give people what they want by giving them what they were looking for. Most Search Engines try to rank content on how relevant it is to the users search.

Tip 2 - The search engines look at the meta tags - title, description then h1, h2, your content bold and italic tags and from all that info the search engine creates a relevancy score for your page for various search terms. Keyword tags seem to be used by half the search engines in that score. It certainly won’t hurt to use them. Some may argue this point but this is based on my experience of 11 years in the biz. There are more in depth discussions about the actual formula but this is basic SEO.

Tip 3 - Content is KING, bottom line your content will get you ranked well. It also keeps your visitors coming back. There is no substitute for well written RELEVANT content. Really, if you are selling snowshoes you don’t want to say you are selling swim suits - unless you are selling them too. It will frustrate the user and they’ll remember - trust me - that you misled them.

Tip 4- Don’t try to be everything to everyone. For each page of your site decide on 3 or 4 keywords / key phrases that you want to optimize for. Many people make the mistake of trying to pack literally hundreds of keywords into one page all that does is dilute your message.

Tip 5 - Use your main idea, (key phrase) in your title, description, keyword, h1 or h2 tags and bold it in your content. These practices will insure that your page is well constructed and the search engines will see it as more relevant. Don’t bother using filler for the rest of your content. Make sure it’s pertinent to the topic, it will all help in raising your content relevancy score.

Tip 6 - Use cascading style sheets ( css ). CSS is a way for your site to look very fresh and clean but be very very search engine friendly. CSS usually has less html between the header and design than traditional html sites. This format allows the search engine bots to quickly get to the content and links of your site.

Tip 7 Avoid Flash - well not entirely but it does have it’s place. Flash sites can be SEO’ed but it’s not as easy as html / css/ dynamic sites. If you are just starting off, please don’t go with an all flash site. It will make your SEO job so much harder - yeah they look cool but won’t do much good if you are the only one looking at them.

Just a footnote. I had a inquiry from a prospect at my day job that wanted a quote to optimize their website. So I did some preliminary research and saw their site was all flash, not only that but it was a multi-page flash site all on one HTML page. So when I searched in Google for all the pages that Google had indexed it only returned one result. The “real” site was 37 pages. The only thing that Google had indexed was their page title. YIKES. It was a great looking - probably expensive site but it won’t do any good if no one can find it…!

Part 2 of this series will deal with what you can do after you’ve built your finely crafted pages - this part is wicked cool and best yet FREE!

Online Marketing - Steps To Get Your Squidoo Marketing Lens On The First Page Of Google

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

Is your lens just not making it onto the first page of Google like it’s suppose to? Here are some great tactics to help you put it where it belongs.

Step 1: Digg it

Digging is a valuable way to get your account promoted and increase it’s page rankings with Google. When you digg your lens, that lens goes into the digg.com database and is then quickly sent to Google. A great thing about digg.com is that people can vote if your content is valuable or not. Use this to your advantage! You can digg your own lens! It’s perfectly fine! Just don’t make it look like it’s spam. The more people digg your lens, the more Google increases your page ranking! This is the most valuable marketing tactic for any squidoo lens, with digg.com alone, you can easily dominate your competition. And GOOGLE LOVES DIGG! Digg it!

Step 2: Bookmarking

Social bookmarking is one of the fastest and easiest ways to get backlinks to your website from websites with public relationships of more than 4. Google loves backlinks, so if Google loves it, then Google should have it. All you do with a social bookmarking website, is that you enter in your lens’ information and click send. That’s all there is to it. I suggest that you use onlywire.com though. It’s free and it sends your information to all of the social bookmarking websites that your signed up with. It just makes the process easier and faster.

Step 3: Pinging

Pinging your lens can improve your page rankings with Google. When you send in a ping, it notifies the social bookmarking websites that your profile has been updates and that tells the social bookmarking website, that you update your information frequently. Google loves this. Whenever you ping, your telling Google, Hey, I update my information with valuable resources frequently. Google loves it. I suggest that you use both pingoat.com and pingomatic.com

Step 4: Craigslist

Use craigslist.org to enter in a free advertisement. Google likes craigslist, so your page ranking will also increase. Just sign up with craigslist, it’s absolutely free, and just put up your lens information in the small biz ads. This is a great way to increase your page rankings.

Step 5: Updating your information

Update your lens frequently. I cannot stress how important this is to your lens’ success. But if you’re lazy, I suggest that you use the RSS feed submission and put in a link to someone else’s blog. Make sure that their blog is updated frequently. This technique is great if your too lazy to update your own information onto your lens.

Step 6: Social networking

This is the final and last step. This step should only be used if you feel like it or the other steps, just aren’t working. Go onto any social networking website that talks about whatever your lens is about and start contributing to that community. The more you contribute, the more people will go to your website. Just put your websites link in your signature. Don’t talk about your website, this is bad! I suggest that you use myspace.com, it has more than 200 million members, people use it daily, and it’s free.

Use these tactics, work hard, update, keep learning, and soon your lens will be on Google’s first page.

Facebook and Google in Reference Checks - What Employers Use to Research You

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

Increasingly employers admit to using social networking sites and search engines as tools in conducting reference checks in the employment process. Social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn and search engines like Yahoo and Google have become very popular for employers to search and screen applicants.

Business Justification.

Why would employers bother using Google and Facebook to research potential applicants? Is it simply curiosity or is there real business justification? Many studies confirm the costs associated with the bad hiring decision. The cost of a turnover is estimated at twice the annual salary for particular position. The cost of a bad hire that stays with a company is even greater.

Companies also have an interest to limit “potential liability” associated with a poor hire. For example, hiring someone who runs a website espousing racist views or illegal activities can represent a huge potential liability to any company. So there are many reasons why a company may choose these avenues to research a potential candidate or conduct a reference check.

Applicants

With the ever increasing popularity of social networking sites and the omnipotent search engines like Google, personal information has never been easier to obtain. Recently, Facebook has opened up it’s site to search engines like Yahoo and Google. Despite the legal or moral concerns job seekers may have with employers using Google or Facebook to view their personal information and conduct employment reference checks, it would probably be wise for job seekers to be careful of what they post on the web.

Employers

Regardless of technology, established employment law still applies. In many countries, there is specific legislation against discriminatory hiring practices. In Canada, the Human Rights Act protects individuals from discriminatory hiring practices on the basis of religion, race, gender, marital status, disability, and the so on. It is advisable for employers to be familiar with legislation and concepts like BFOR’s etc. For example, a company should not bypass an applicant, because the search engine results reveal that this applicant has a religious website. If employers are considering incorporating the use of search engines and social network sites in their screening and selection process, then be consistent in application while abiding by all established employment law. Consistency means that all applicants go through the same hiring process, that your policies should be applied consistently. For example if your company conducts criminal background checks as a condition of employment, then it should complete this step for all applicants not select ones because they look like a criminal. If employers have any concerns regarding their hiring policy it would be prudent to contact their Human Resources professional or labour lawyer.

Lastly, as mentioned above, the business decision to employ search engines and networking sites to research potential employees is driven primarily by cost avoidance. That is employers are motivated to avoid the potential cost and liabilities of a poor hire. In this same logic, it would then also be important for employers to consider the impact on public perception and employee engagement in employing such policies. Since if employees and job seekers view using search engines and networking sites to research applicants as distasteful, then by doing so the employer would have defeated the purpose of the exercise.

Online Marketing For The Newbie

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

For the first time internet marketer, you have probably already been inundated with the best and the worst online marketing campaigns. As a new internet marketer there are some key things that you need to do to achieve success marketing online.

Brand Yourself

If you are new to online marketing and wish to earn a substantial online income, then one of the most important things that you can do is to brand yourself online. While you’re first starting out, you may wish to market underneath the branding of your sponsor. Although this could be alright for awhile, ultimately you will need to branch out and brand yourself online.

Reinvest In Your Business

There are several ways that you can market online for free or low cost. You could use article marketing, post videos on YouTube, keep a daily blog, list ads on Craigslist, or forum chat.

However, at some point you will need to start investing some money into your marketing campaign. One of the most common methods is by utilizing Pay Per Click advertising. It will be vitally important to the success or failure of your business that you take future earnings and reinvest them. It is advisable to refrain from taking profits from the business for personal use until after your first year of business.

Testing

Another key component to online marketing is to realize that most marketers did not start out with wildly successful marketing campaigns. Many successful marketers have tried and tested several different websites, autoresponder messages, and paid ads.

You should continue to test and improve upon what is working and disregard what isn’t. It is best to not grow too fond of any one idea or marketing plan. What will make you successful in the long run is to change and adapt your marketing strategies to fit with the current trends. If you fail to stay ahead of the times, you will get passed by.

Conclusion

It is important that you keep researching what others are doing and test on your own to find what works the best for you. The biggest thing that you need to do is to be persistent and stick with it until you find a winning marketing campaign. Many new marketers are so close to achieving success online, but give up and quit just before they could have realized their dreams.

While it’s not always easy, just remember that building a business is a lot like building a skyscraper. Step by step you will realize what is required to have success on the internet.

Universal Search - Google’s Plan For the Future

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

Recently Google has announced a major change in the way the search engine will deliver results. There was a time when you had to click an extra button to see a map, video or image but now all of these results will be rolled together. When searching for ??Darth Vader? you will see Image results, videos, related key terms and news all within the organic results, making media much more accessible. The expansion further consolidates Google??s lead in the search market and will give users more targeted results, as well as more targeted ads. Vertical search will integrate vertical search results into Google??s organic search results, which should greatly increase relevancy.

Since Google??s use of SearchMash it??s clear that integrated search results are coming. Universal search will include Images, Maps, Books, Video, and News into web results. Additionally there will be new navigational elements to help guide the user. There will be a contextual navigation to help users narrow their search. For example a search for ??Moby Dick? will only yield one contextual search which will be ??books? if there were movies or images however they would also be included. Also there will be a universal navigation bar to make it easier to access Google services like Gmail or Analytics.

Many question Google??s improvement on success concerting that Google??s motive is for targeted advertisements rather than usability. But personalized search isn??t anything new, search engines have been working on it for years and only now is it gaining speed. Ask.com launched Ask X, a personalized search engine that includes media in the search results. Also the user created search engines known as Swicki??s do a similar thing. Clustered and vertical search results aren??t new, Clusty has been doing it for awhile. As of yet there is no major response from Google users but this likely means user favor quicker searching. ??Our goal is not just to get people to spend more time on Google; it??s for them to be able to accomplish more with Google,? says Sergey Brin says. ??We actually want them to get more tasks done faster.? From here search engines can being to do amazing things, and search engine optimization will never be the same.

Exactly How To Become A Successful Pay Per Click Affiliate

Monday, April 7th, 2008

One of the original internet marketing methods, pay-per-click advertising is still one of the most popular forms of promoting a product or a service due, in large part, to the emergence of Google AdSense. Many marketers have discovered the large paydays that can be had if they become a successful pay per click affiliate.

Becoming a pay per click affiliate is actually very easy. The first step is to sign up for a pay-per-click program like AdSense. Once you sign up as a pay per click affiliate, the work begins. If you want to become a successful pay per click affiliate, there are numerous steps you must take:

Step One: Design a Web site on which you will display your pay per click advertisements. Most internet marketing experts recommend having only a few pay per click ads per page, preferably on the right-hand side of the page. You can also embed hyperlinks in the content on your Web site. Oftentimes, embedding links to the pay per click ad is the most popular way to go because it’s also the most unobtrusive method of having pay per click ads on a Web site.

Step Two: To succeed as a pay per click affiliate, you must create a content rich Web site and regularly update it. Research topics in your niche, and those that are related to the ads on your Web site, and write relevant content that will be useful to your visitors.

Make sure you use keywords in your content, but don’t use so many keywords that your articles become stilted and difficult to read. To determine the best keywords for your content, use a keyword tool like Overture or Word Tracker. Generally, you can use a free version of such tools, but there are premier versions that come with a fee.

Step Three: Drive traffic to your Web site. As a pay per click affiliate, you must drive traffic to your Web site, so that visitors can click on your ads. There are a multitude of methods you can use to drive traffic to your Web site, including article marketing, posting on forums in your niche, blogging, social bookmarking, and creating a lens at Squidoo.

That’s it: It may come in three easy steps, but realize you do have to work to create a worthwhile site. The one key to your success as a pay per click affiliate is to be proactive. Don’t just throw up a Web site with some Google AdSense ads on it, drop some content on the site, and be done with it. You must consistently build your Web site and pack it with valuable content, so your visitors will return again and again.
